Duong joins the class

Hello,

my name is Duong and I am not certain about my major yet, but most likely it will be Anthropology or psychology. I was born in the Czech Republic 21 years ago. My parents come from the north of Vietnam, from the cities of Ha Noi and Nam Dinh. Growing up in Europe as a first-generation Czech Vietnamese, I have always felt a certain level of uncertainty in my identity. Am I Vietnamese or am I Czech? Am I a European or a Southeast Asian? Because I was living in Europe pretty much my whole life, I never really thought about what it means to be a Southeast Asian. Back in the Czech Republic, I met quite a lot of other Vietnamese Czechs and one thing that was quite common among them was the fact that they never really wanted to identify themselves with Vietnam or Southeast Asia. This was sometimes even common among the first generation of Vietnamese migrants.
