Exploitation and Expectation - Balancing Chinese Tourism

The Indonesian government has expressed competing ideas about Chinese tourists: one, Chinese tourists are a huge market that Indonesia should continue to tap into (http://www.thejakartapost.com/travel/2016/08/24/govt-eyes-more-chinese-t...) and two, that Chinese tourists and especially tourism companies continually exploit Indonesia by operating illegally (http://www.thejakartapost.com/travel/2016/09/22/many-foreign-online-trav...). Perhaps this dichotomy reflects the greater ambivalence towards China's history of imperialism in the region and current, relatively positive, diplomatic relations.

It'd be interesting to see how tourism can be interpreted through a lens of post-colonialism and to examine how to best integrate tourism within Indonesian culture. It's also interesting to think about this relationship with Chinese citizens in the context of the Indonesian killings of 1965-66.
