With Formosa Still in Mind, Hoa Sen Group’s Steel Project Raises Concern among Experts

This article from the Nhan Dan expresses concern over the Hoa Sen Group’s approved steel project in the wake of the disaster caused by the Formosa Ha Tinh Company, another steel company. The project still in its early stages with only some planning was already approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Many call this a hasty decision and experts warn that large-scale steel projects such as this one are at a high risk of causing pollution as seen by the Formosa disaster. Experts are wondering how the Hoa Sen Group will manage to produce the money for the expected investment of US$10.5 billion. Additionally, the world is facing steel overcapacity so many see this project as a disregard for the world market.
If this project came to fruition, how will the public be affected? Will possible pollution cause fear over the safety of drinking water and the quality of fish and salt from the ocean? It is interesting to see how the Hoa Sen Group’s strive to be included in the larger, developing world might affect the people of Vietnam.
