Jessica joins the class (a little late)

Jessica was born in Indonesia and lived there for 7 years before moving to Singapore. Her legal, offical, name on the register is only ‘Jessica’ without any surnames or middle names because her real surname is a Chinese surname and for some (political? ethic-based?) reason her family was unable to put that down in the official register in Indonesia. She hopes to find out more, in time.

Jessica was majoring in Environmental Studies before she realised that she was more interested in people and cultures than she was in marine biology and fighting against the effects of the Anthropocene. Her love for the environment still plays a very huge part of her lifestyle choices, though – just this morning, she decided to give the plastic straw a skip. Her other interests include languages and yoga. She is fluent in English, Chinese, Bahasa Indonesia, and an Indonesian dialect, Batak, and is competent in Spanish, and some basic Cantonese. She is partiuclarly interested in how languages both build and destroy boundaries, friendships, and relationships.
