Marielle Lee

Marielle Lee has spent the better part of her life in Singapore, but has also lived in Johor Bahru, Malaysia for three years. She recently spent her summer working at an NGO in Bangkok, Thailand. She is passionate about good food (especially street food) and could live off a diet of just chicken rice, pad thai and roti canai if she wanted to. She recounts her time in Bangkok, a city of countless charms. “The narrow sois (alleys) were always littered with street hawkers and thai massage parlors. Their drivers have no fear; driving against oncoming traffic is a no-brainer if you want to get around. My favourite mode of transport, however, was definitely the “wins”, or motorbike taxis. Hail a man with a bright orange vest down and haggle a price - he will take you anywhere. The Thais love food, but they especially love it sweet and spicy. I would never forget the first time I witnessed my Thai friend pouring heaps of tomato ketchup on her pizza or asking for five chili padis in her papaya salad. I was terrified but amused.”
