New movement to remember and redress Indonesian Killings 1965-66

The Indonesian Killings of 1965-66 became news again last week, when activists urged the Indonesian government to publish the results of a 2-day symposium in April meant to address justice for the victims. For context, the Indonesian Killings were a cleansing of ethnic Chinese, communists and other leftists (it's also the subject of an intense documentary, "The Act of Killing" - highly recommended). Although the government had promised to use the recommendations to finally atone for the human rights abuses, it seems that transparency has been lacking (http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2016/09/21/govt-urged-to-publish-1965...). Two days later, it became known that the National Commission of Human Rights had no role in drafting the recommendations (http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2016/09/23/komnas-ham-not-involved-in...). Despite an outward commitment to make reparations, it seems that the Indonesian government still has a long way to go before justice is served.

As a result of this uncertainty, activists indicated their plans to bring up the genocide to a UN representative (http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2016/09/22/activists-plan-to-bring-up...). However, as the government must officially welcome a UN representative, it must be a willing participant in these discussions, which represents a potential impasse. Finally, this article is a great overview of activists' and survivors' frustration: http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2016/09/22/1965-survivors-want-un-pro....
