Parent Affected by Formosa Disaster Cannot Afford to Send Their Children to School

Since the fish began dying in April, over 1000 children from the province of the fishing community of Ky Ha were unable to return to school following the end of summer. Parents working in the fishing industry have taken a financial hit and are hoping for government aid so that their children can resume their education. Believed to be Vietnam’s worst environmental disaster in history, over 200,000 people, including 41,000 fishermen, have been directly affected by the pollution incident. And while the sea is determined to be “safe,” many fishermen continue having difficulty selling their fish. Formosa, the steel company which took responsibility for the disaster, compensated US$500 million the Vietnamese government, but before the money can be distributed, a list of affected peoples must be written up. Local officials agreed cut tuition fees for families affected by a third.
As the events of this disaster play out, it is clear that it is no longer just affect fishermen but also the education of the Vietnamese youth, who are too poor to afford tuition. They can only hope for swift government intervention and aid.
