Sixth Months after Disaster, Residents of Coastal Villages Still Angry

Residents of the provinces affected by the Formosa disaster still have a fresh anger for the steel company. Thousands of demonstrators protested at the steel factory at Ha Tinh on October 2. While online reports of the protest in the state-controlled new media were removed, protesters took to social media to share photos of the dead fish and to use the hashtag #IChooseFish. Many believe the government is still withholding information about the chemical spill. The three chemicals that were involved in the spill disclosed by the government are not considered to be harmful to fish in the long-term; people suspect that there are other chemicals still not yet disclosed.
This article raises many questions about the accountability of the government officials. Many Vietnamese citizens worry about the future of fish in Vietnam and still wait for the information that they deserve to hear.
