U.S. to End Economic Sanctions Against Myanmar
On Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi’s recent visit to meet with President Obama to discuss the state of US sanctions against Myanmar, the president announced that in response to the efforts made by the new Myanmar government, the US was prepared to begin lifting sanctions against Myanmar.
I found this WSJ article to be fair summary of the whole situation, taking into account the strides the new Myanmar government has made while acknowledging that there is a long way to go. (http://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-to-end-economic-sanctions-against-myanma...)
This article from Human Rights Watch was posted a few weeks before the announcement that the US was ready to lift sanctions and argues for the continued presence of sanctions, maintaining that any reforms that have been in process will be at risk if the pressure on the military is not continued. https://www.hrw.org/news/2016/09/06/burma-us-should-retain-key-sanctions
The article from The Myanmar Times (http://www.mmtimes.com/index.php/national-news/22569-obama-pledges-to-re...) was the only one that I could find that discussed the possible negative effects of allowing the sanctions to continue. The Myanmar Times also posted a glossed over item in most other sources, (http://www.mmtimes.com/index.php/national-news/22565-renewed-rights-reso...) on how the EU for the first time in 25 years, decided not to table a human rights resolution calling attention to Myanmar’s deficiencies in the area, in recognition of the country’s “progress on democratic transition.”
