Victim of Hate Crime Speaks Up
Andrew Budikusuma, a 24-year old of Chinese heritage who was brutally attacked for looking like "Ahok," the governor of Jakarta who is also of Chinese heritage, has recently filed a police report on the incident. Budiksuma's attack gained attention after he wrote about it on Facebook, and he made the decision to report the attack despite his parents' belief that he should just "accept his position as a member of a minority community." I read a lot of coverage from the Jakarta Post on this attack and most recently, found a column in response to the attack that asked ethnic Indonesians, "Are we no better than Trump?" The article can be found here: http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2016/09/23/racism-us-are-we-no-better.... It raises interesting points about similarities between marginalization in Indonesia and America.
