Minority President for Singapore?
A commission delegated with reviewing the office of the President of Singapore produced a recommendation that the position be held by a minority from "time to time." Specifically, this is an affirmative action proposal to recognize the Malay population, which is vastly outnumbered by ethnic Chinese (http://www.straitstimes.com/politics/proposal-on-minority-president-stri... and http://www.straitstimes.com/politics/elected-presidency-white-paper-rese...).
This is a truly fascinating move by Singapore to achieve a more equal society. Already, Malays have expressed concern of tokenism, which the commission responded to by emphasizing the meritocratic criteria for being eligible. This opinion piece sheds more light on the recommendation, and what it means for Singapore: http://www.straitstimes.com/opinion/why-minority-provision-deserves-support.
Here's one more article on the proposed changes, which comes from the South China Morning Post: http://www.scmp.com/week-asia/politics/article/2022077/whats-behind-sing...
*Important to note that the President of Singapore is a largely ceremonial role, while the Prime Minister is the head of the government
